Networking Hour

Please join us for the Networking Hour, hosted by Jeff Bawol, President of Avnet Technology Solutions Americas.

Date: April 10, 2010

Location:
University of Advancing Technology
2625 W. Baseline Rd., Tempe, Ariz.
Phone: (602) 383-8228

This is an opportunity for all participants to meet and mingle with the enthusiastic students, inspiring faculty members and generous sponsors of the Avnet Tech Games and industry leaders. Representatives from companies such as Accenture, AMD, Avnet, Belkin, New Angle Media, Premise One, VMware and other local companies will be there for this exciting meet and greet event.

How will it work?

During the networking hour, students will be challenged to speak with at least three different people, ideally with industry leaders from Avnet and ATG sponsors, as well as college administrators and faculty members. We will ring a bell at 5-minute intervals to encourage participants to change conversations and meet with new people. Students will write down the names and titles of the people they have met on a ‘networking card’ provided to them. If they complete the card, they can enter a drawing to win great prizes. The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the networking hour. Winner must be present to win.

Networking Tips:

Going up to someone you don’t know and introducing yourself can be very intimidating. But everyone is here today because they are interested in meeting you and learning more about you and your project. This is also a great opportunity for you to ask professionals working with leading technology companies about how they got into the field and to learn more about their jobs.

Here are some tips for making the most of your networking experience:

Prepare your "elevator pitch" ahead of time. This is a 30-second response to the question "Tell me about yourself." You can talk about such things as:

  • your Avnet Tech Games project
  • your major
  • recent jobs
  • what you are hoping to do when you get out of school

Prepare a few questions to ask them. Your conversation partner will probably have questions to ask you, but be ready to ask some questions yourself. Examples include:

  • what does your company do
  • what is your current job/role
  • what did you major in when you were in school
