Android(TM) App Challenge

This virtual event (offered in the fall and spring) will provide students with the opportunity to develop a Google Android™ App that will be judged based on a predefined set of criteria. Google’s Android™ operating system and Open API are the latest new technology in this space.

1-2 students per team

Unlimited participation from students in any accredited U.S. College or University

No faculty sponsor is required

Registration Deadline:

  • Fall: October 16, 2009 – Registration is closed.
  • Spring: February 12, 2010 – Registration is closed.

Disciplines / Skills Recommended:

  • Computer Science Major (or related major)
  • Java Development skills
  • Graphic design skills (optional)
  • Research skills (students will need to research & learn how to setup the development environment and use the Android™ API’s)

Event Description:

By Monday, October 19, 2009 (Fall virtual game) or Friday, February 12, 2010 (Spring virtual game) registered student teams will be provided with the following information:

  • Application expectations
  • High level functional requirements
  • Technical requirements (version, emulator, etc.)
  • Judging methodology & criteria
  • Virtual game blog site to communicate with game owner with questions
  • Submission requirements & procedure
  • Rules & expectations for the game

NOTE: Students will be able to use a specified emulator program to validate their application. This will be the same emulator program that will be used by the judges.

Student teams will then have until December 4, 2009 5PM (Fall virtual game) or March 22, 2010 5PM (Spring virtual game) to submit their application based on the defined submission requirements and procedure. The winning team will be judged on how well the application met the functional requirements, creativity of development, and results of the emulator criteria.

The winning team will be announced on December 18, 2009 (Fall Virtual Game) and April 10, 2010 (Spring Virtual Game).

Technical Parameters:

  • Submissions will be developed using Android™ 1.5 SDK, Release 3 (available at http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.5_r3/index.html)
  • Supported operating systems for the Android™ SDK and tools are:
    •      Windows XP (32-bit) or Vista (32- or 64-bit)
    •      Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later (x86 only)
    •      Linux (tested on Linux Ubuntu Dapper Drake)
  • Submissions will be developed using the Eclipse Ganymede™ (3.4.0 – 3.4.2) IDE.
  • Submissions will be developed using the Android Development Tools™ (ADT) Plug-in for Eclipse™
  • Submissions will include the complete Eclipse Android™ project including the source code
  • Submissions will be developed towards the build target Android™ 1.5 with min SDK version 3
  • Submissions will be developed with JDK Compiler Compliance level 1.6

End product must:

  • Be the original work of the contestant
  • Meet the stated functional requirements
  • Work properly within the designated development environment, build target, JDK and SDK versions
  • Demonstrate creativity

Fall Schedule:

  • Complete Registration - October 16, 2009
  • Receive Application Requirements - October 19, 2009
  • Submit completed application - December 4, 2009 5PM
  • Select winner - December 18, 2009*

Spring Schedule:

  • Complete registration - February 12, 2010
  • Receive Application Requirements - February 12, 2010
  • Submit completed application - March 22, 2010 5PM
  • Select winner - April 10, 2010*

*Teams not located in the Phoenix area will be able to view the awards ceremony via a webcast.

Awards:

  • Each team member (Fall and Spring) will win a $1,000 scholarship
