About the Avnet Tech Games:

The Avnet Tech Games (ATG) is an annual multidisciplinary technology competition open to all colleges, institutes, and universities – public and private – in Arizona. The event offers students attending these educational institutions the opportunity to apply what they are learning through current curriculum to real-working-world scenarios.

Each competitive event – each with a different sponsor - is unique and requires students to test their knowledge, creativity, decision-making, problem-solving and technical skills. Some events are designed to showcase the individual, while others are geared toward teams. All events are designed to help prepare students for today's highly-competitive job market.

Competitive events are judged by an independent panel of sponsor representatives and technical experts. First-place team members for eight of the nine games will each win a $1,000 scholarship. The winning team for the Invent a Technical Product game will present to the Arizona Business Accelerator to possibly take their product to market.

Interested educational institutions and students must pre-register in order to reserve their slots and participate in their chosen competitive events. Slots are limited and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. When an event’s slots are filled, registration will be closed.

The Avnet Tech Games includes a trade show and networking hour. The trade show features sponsors and other local companies and educational institutions. The networking hour encourages students to meet and mingle with event sponsors and industry leaders from companies such as AMD, AT&T, Avnet, EMC, ITPartners, New Angle Media, Protiviti, and Microsoft. And, captains of industry have the opportunity to get a look at tomorrow’s leaders and hear fresh perspective on product design and marketing.

The day’s events culminate in an awards ceremony, where the winning students are announced and awarded their scholarships and prizes. Sponsors have the opportunity to mingle with participating students, faculty, administrators, Avnet executives and other corporate leaders.

The 2008 ATG Competitive Events include:

AMD Build the Fastest Computer – Teams will build, assemble and optimize their computer from a box of pre-selected and ordered parts to compete for the fastest computer.

Accenture Tech Challenge – Develop and present a proposal that demonstrates how an immediate business need can be solved with a unique combination of current and upcoming technologies. This game enhances student awareness of the business value of high technology solutions.

Belkin Patch Panel Madness – Quickly and efficiently build a working data network using provided network diagram, cabling, patch panels, switches and racks. The game demonstrates the student team’s understanding of data networking and cabling skills.

Defense in Depth – Teams will connect, configure and effectively secure a computer network so that it is usable and productive to support a fictitious company’s business demands. In addition, teams also will use troubleshooting skills to find a rogue user and unauthorized access point on the network.

Design and Build a Digital Device – Teams will design and build a digital electronic device to achieve a specific set of criteria. Students will show their work, and write and present a technical report.

Invent a Technical Product – Individuals, or teams, will conceive, develop and research an innovative product concept that does not already exist in the market or in the patent literature.

Multimedia Fast Break – Teams will design and create a 30-second promotional spot based on client meetings and prepared raw footage using the technology of their choice.

Robot Race Obstacle Course – Using the Standard LEGO Mindstorm® NXT Robot kit, each team will have five hours to build and program a robot to maneuver around an obstacle course and perform a set of predefined tasks. The robot that is best able to complete the event with the fastest time wins.

Microsoft Build a Business Web Site – Interdisciplinary teams will meet with the client, then design and build an interactive Web site that serves the client’s needs.
